Cave Dogs is composed of a community of artists working in a variety of media who are interested in interdisciplinary approaches to creative projects and invested in creating and sustaining community.
All the members of Cave Dogs share a strong work ethic and a commitment to the collaborative process. Improvisational techniques are used in the creation of the imagery and sound. Together, we acknowledge the unexpected, celebrate the surprise, and allow the work to take shape from it. The making of our performances is a continuous dialogue between the musicians, puppeteers, prop-makers, performers, writers and the audience.
Members of Cave Dogs embrace interdisciplinary perspective in all matters. For each show, the members routinely alternate between performing, puppeteering, lighting, gripping, running tech and crewing. Our economic use of personnel allows us to adapt each performance to the venue and the audience. To that end no two performances are alike. Some changes may involve a series of subtle improvisations between characters others changes may involve physically altering the set to allow the audience to experience the performance alternatively from both front house and back stage.
The process of creating a Cave Dogs performance involves collaboration and organization between an average of 40-50 artists, who each bring a specific expertise to the project. After the piece has been created, six to eight artists perform the work for an average of three years. Although Cave dogs members change over the course of time, the principle collaborators currently are Suzanne Stokes, Artistic Director; James Fossett, Video Director; Dean Jones, Music Director; Company members include Adam Mastropaolo, Maria Jansdotter-Farr, Ted Conway, Douglas Keller, Tracy Leavitt, Dan Getman, and Trudy Trutwin.
